‘Insecure’ producer Prentice Penny is set to unveil the three-part docuseries, “Black Twitter: A People’s History,” on Hulu starting May 9. Based on Jason Parham’s WIRED cover story, the series has already garnered attention, securing a straight-to-series order from Onyx Collective in January 2023.
The docuseries explores the ascent of Black Twitter, a digital force that has significantly impacted American political and cultural life. From influential movements to the creation of viral memes, the series aims to provide an insightful look into the roots and influence of Black Twitter.
Contributors include key figures such as TJ Adeshola (Twitter’s former head of global content partnerships), Rembert Browne (former director of product and community), Brad Jenkins (former White House Office of Public Engagement associate director), April Reign (#OscarsSoWhite creator), and God-is Rivera (former X global director of culture and community).
Comedians Baratunde Thurston, W. Kamau Bell, Amanda Seales, and Sam Jay, along with cultural critics, journalists, and authors, contribute their perspectives to enrich the narrative. The series also features Roxane Gay, Van Lathan, Jamilah Lemieux, Jemele Hill, Luvvie Ajayi Jones, among others.
Produced by A Penny for Your Thoughts, WIRED Studios, and Culture House Media, “Black Twitter: A People’s History” is a collaboration between Prentice Penny, Sarah Amos, Helen Estabrook, Agnes Chu, Raeshem Nijhon, Carri Twigg, Nicole Galovski, Joie Jacoby, Shawna Carroll, and more. Penny, Chris Pollack, and Alex Soler serve as executive producers, with Penny also directing as part of his overall deal with Onyx Collective.
